About our Scholars’ Network
Our Scholars' Network offers a professional affiliation for psychoanalytically informed academics and researchers who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of psychoanalytical thinking.
Join Us
Membership is available to those who have made a significant contributions to the advancement of psychoanalytic thinking through the use of psychoanalytic theory in their teaching, research and writing. Joining us will enable you to support the development of a unique network and online platform that shares innovative approaches and cutting-edge thinking; encourages cross-disciplinary practices and research; and fosters collaboration among scholars and clinicians.

Categories of the Scholars' Network
This category is reserved for those who joined the Network at its inception, and applications for this category are now closed.
This category is for applicants who are nonclinical academics who work either in university settings or as independent scholars. Applications will also be received from trained clinicians from non-BPC registration bodies (e.g., the BACP or the UKCP). Membership in this category will not be available to clinical registrants of the BPC.
Applicants must provide evidence of a publication track-record (e.g., publication of a book, or book chapters, or a significant number of peer reviewed journal articles), which constitutes a substantial written contribution to the advancement of psychoanalytical knowledge.
Applications will also be considered from those individuals who have contributed to the psychoanalytical community by having created substantial artistic projects (e.g., films, radio programmes, television programmes, or art exhibitions) of an overtly psychoanalytical nature.
The Scholars Committee will also entertain applications from those individuals who have contributed regularly to the teaching of psychoanalysis in university settings over a considerable period of time.
Applicants must reside in the United Kingdom.
This category is solely for BPC registered clinicians who have contributed significantly to psychoanalytical scholarship.
Every clinical practitioner of the British Psychoanalytic Council who meets the same academic criteria for the category of “Scholars” would be permitted to apply to become recognised as a “Clinician Scholar” of the Scholars Network.
A Clinician Scholar must demonstrate that they have made a contribution to the advancement of psychoanalytical knowledge through publications, creative community projects, or extensive teaching experience.
This category of membership is open to those individuals who have registered for a doctoral degree and who have committed themselves to a dissertation project of an overtly psychoanalytical nature.
This category of membership is also open to recent doctoral graduates who have completed an overtly psychoanalytical dissertation but who have not yet produced a significant body of published work in this field.
Each applicant is required to submit a copy of his or her Ph.D. proposal with a letter of endorsement from a Ph.D. supervisor, underscoring the overtly psychoanalytical nature of the dissertation project.
This category of membership is for psychoanalytical academics or academically orientated psychoanalytical clinicians from outside of the United Kingdom who have made a significant contribution to psychoanalytical scholarship (as outlined in the criteria for the abovementioned category of “Scholar”).

Scholar – £79.00
Clinician Scholar – £42.00
Associate Scholar – £53.00
International Scholar – £105.00 / £84.00 / £63.00 In recognising that our International Scholar applicants may come from countries with varying costs of living, we offer applicants in this category to choose a fee that is appropriate for them.
If you would like to join the Scholars Network, please complete our Join the Scholars Network form. Please check you meet all of the criteria before completing the form.
Your application will be reviewed by our Scholars’ Network subcommittee, according to the criteria of the category that you select. If approved, your application will then be sent to the Board for ratification. Board meetings take place quarterly, so it may take up to three months after you apply before we can confirm the outcome of your application. Thank you in advance for your patience.
By applying to be part of the Scholars’ Network, you are agreeing not to bring the BPC nor the Scholars’ Network into disrepute. The BPC reserves the right to remove you from the Network at any point.
