What is Complex Trauma: the Tavistock Model?
Who are Specialist Trauma Psychotherapists?
Specialist Trauma Psychotherapists are qualified psychotherapists who have undertaken a two-year training in Complex Trauma: the Tavistock Model.
Specialist Trauma Psychotherapists meet the following criteria:
- They have a psychotherapy qualification and are registered with the BPC, BACP or CPJA (other registrations may be valid).
- They have studied the theory and practice of complex trauma, including psychoanalytic approaches, attachment theory, neurobiology, developmental trauma, and multimodal approaches to treatment.
- They have undertaken intensive, supervised clinical work with patients within the Tavistock Trauma Service, including longer-term trauma treatment and ongoing group supervision with senior trauma clinicians.
- They have participated in an experiential group designed to support reflective capacity and understanding of the emotional, relational, and institutional dynamics involved in trauma work.
About the training
Complex Trauma: the Tavistock Model is a clinical, post-qualification training for psychotherapists, grounded in psychoanalytic theory and practice, and delivered by Tavistock Education and Training.
Combining a supervised clinical placement, academic programme and experiential group, the training offers a unique opportunity to develop both the theoretical framework and clinical skills needed to work effectively with traumatised individuals – drawing on the expertise of the renowned, multimodal Tavistock Trauma Service.
Entry requirements
To be eligible for Complex Trauma: the Tavistock Model, applicants must be:
- a psychodynamic or psychoanalytic psychotherapist or psychoanalyst, currently registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC); or
- a psychodynamic psychotherapist, currently registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP); or
- a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, currently a registered member of the UKCP’s Council for Psychoanalysis and Jungian Analysis College (CPJA); or
- an art therapist, group analyst or integrative therapist, where part of your training has been psychodynamic.
