Description

This workshop will be delivered via Zoom online.

Countertransference is fundamentally our thoughts, feelings and reactions to our clients. Recognising and working with this is vital in the therapeutic relationship. Yet whilst countertransference can provide us with a rich source of knowledge and information about our clients, it can be perplexing and confusing to work with.

  • Is it me or is it you?
  • What is Countertransference? What is the link with transference?
  • Do you ever struggle with the boundaries, collude with a client or feel stuck?
  • Do you sometimes feel your mood or energy changes?
  • What might the client be communicating to us?
  • What is being asked of us?
  • How do you know what is coming from the client or what may be your own struggles?
  • Do you want to feel better able to stay with the ‘not-knowing’, whilst remaining ‘containing’, and therefore use countertransference as a tool for your practice rather than experiencing it as a hindrance?

This workshop will enable you to gain more of an understanding of the complexities of countertransference: the intersubjective dynamics between therapist and client. Through experiential exercises and focused discussions, in partners and in groups, you will explore countertransference reflecting on what is being evoked in you and what may be unconscious communication. Using theory, clinical work and film you will explore countertransference in action. Within a safe space, you will explore any current difficulties you may be having with your clinical work. This will enable you to consider practical ways of ‘separating out’ the countertransference – what belongs to you and what belongs to the client and how this can be used effectively within the therapeutic relationship.

By attending this workshop you will:

  • Broaden the understanding of countertransference theoretically, experientially and practically.
  • Gain confidence in recognising, exploring and using countertransference.
  • Be able to reflect on the countertransference within clinical work and to consider interpretations and practical ways of working with it.
  • Leave feeling more skilled at working with the countertransference in clinical practice.

The day will consist of theoretical presentations that will link theory with practice, experiential exercises, case study discussion and film. Time will be allowed for discussion of clinical works and other relevant material.

Target Audience
This course is open to qualified and training psychotherapists and counsellors.  The theoretical orientation of the workshop will be psychodynamic but practitioners of other modalities are welcome to attend.

All participants completing the workshop will receive a Certificate of Attendance for their Continuing Professional Development portfolio.
