Description

“The treatment must do more than destroy the old morbid attitude; it must build up a new attitude that is sound and healthy. This requires a fundamental change of vision.” C G Jung

For centuries, the holistic properties of the right brain have been devalued in favour of left-brain functions and the limited but intensely forensic state of attention they promote. The result is the increase of disconnected, mechanised human experience, particularly in the Western world. In the consulting room, patients present with relational difficulties or a lack of meaning and personal identity, often accompanied by intoxication with repetitive fantasy: an addictive solution to problems as opposed to gaining insight from the integrated operation of ‘true imagination’.

In this illustrated talk, Carol Leader will use case material, examples from the arts, and current research in neuroscience and neuropsychoanalysis to amplify Jung’s relevant and enduring contribution, which also prefigured much of the current research into the emotional systems sited in the lower regions of the human brain representing the ‘hidden spring’ of life energy that promotes human development, social cohesion, and mental health.

Carol Leader is a training and supervising Jungian Analyst and a Senior Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist with the British Psychotherapy Foundation. She is a Fellow of the International Neuropsychoanalysis Association. In 2014, she was awarded the British Journal of Psychotherapy’s Roszika Parker Prize for her paper on William Blake and clinical practice.
