Diversity Policy
The BPC opposes any discrimination of any kind.
This includes, but is not limited to, any discrimination on the basis of age, race, gender, ethnic origin, religious belief or sexual orientation. Selection of candidates for training is to be made only on the basis of qualities directly concerned with the ability to learn and to function as a psychotherapist.
It is expected that this same standard will be used in the appointment and promotion of members of educational faculties, including training and supervising therapists.
As part of the BPC’s commitment to increase the diversity of the profession, we have published below the results of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion surveys from 2021 and 2024, compared with the 2021 census data of the wider UK population. By understanding the current state of diversity in various forms across the organisation, we can then consider the possible barriers to joining the BPC, and the BPC’s role in mitigating these.
Please visit our Diversity and equality bibliographies page for compiled bibliographies on sexual orientations and race, racism and ethnicity, they can assist further a psychoanalytic understanding of diversity.
