MSc Psychological Therapies Practice and Research (Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic Therapy)

The British Psychotherapy Foundation, in partnership with the University of Exeter, is now offering four year programmes of qualifying training as a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist or Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, uniquely designed to accommodate trainees from across the UK.

The first part of the qualifying training consists of a 2 year part time Msc in Psychological therapies practice and research. The Msc may also be taken as a free standing programme.

The MSc programme offers an excellent standard of academic and clinical teaching delivered by experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapy practitioners, supervisors, academics and researchers. This two year programme consists of academic and clinical work leading to the award of a Msc in Psychological Therapies and Research. On successful completion of the MSc students are eligible to apply for Qualifying Training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy or Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. This entails a third year of clinical seminars and two years of clinical work leading to a qualification as a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist, or with a fourth year of seminars and clinical work, as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. Trainees will be competent to work independently and gain membership of the British Psychotherapy Foundation and registration as a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist or a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist with the British Psychoanalytic Council.

As well as the clinical trainings, successful completion of the Msc also makes participants eligible to apply for the Doctor of Clinical Practice programme and in this way continue their academic studying in a way that is complementary to their clinical work.

The programme is particularly orientated to people who have an existing mental health qualification, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and nurses. However, applications will also be considered from other suitably qualified and experienced people.
