The Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families supports children and their families through innovative therapeutic practice and research, training and promoting awareness of mental health issues. In April 2019, the Centre opened its new Centre of Excellence located in King’s Cross.

The Early Years Programme is a nationally and internationally renowned area of work at the Centre, focusing on innovative and specialist psychotherapeutic approaches for families with babies and pre-school children in universal, targeted and specialist areas of work.

The post of Senior Therapist and Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT) Lead in the Early Years Programme team will have an important role in providing leadership, training and clinical interventions related to MBT. This will involve leading our First Steps project, which is a collaboration with the charity Pause, to provide a mentalisation-based group treatment for women who have experienced recurrent removal of children from their care. It will also involve leading the development of our early years MBT training strategy, including supporting the development of a one-year training programme for perinatal mental health and early years CAMHS clinicians, and the adaptation of Structured Clinical Management (SCM) for perinatal populations. There may also be opportunities to support and deliver clinical work within our National Early Years Adoption Therapy Service.

The successful candidate will be an experienced MBT clinician who is confident in training, supervising and clinical practice related to the early years across a range of presentations and modalities (group, individual, couple and family).

The Centre values diversity and aims to have a workforce that reflects the wide range of backgrounds represented in the communities we serve. With this in mind, we would welcome and encourage applications from all sections of the community, particularly from currently under-represented and marginalised groups.

The post-holder will be home-based/remote, both due to the virtual nature of some projects and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In the future, there will be the possibility of carrying out direct clinical work and attending team meetings in person at the Anna Freud Centre, 4-8 Rodney Street, London N1 9JH.
