Talking Therapies Briefing for Commissioners

The We Need to Talk coalition, which includes the BPC, has created a briefing for commissioners with information on the benefits and effectiveness of talking therapies, and which highlights considerations to make when commissioning services.

6 million people currently have anxiety and depression in England, with a further 1 in 100 having a severe mental illness.  1 in 10 children and young people live with a diagnosable mental health condition.  Yet 75% of these people are not receiving appropriate treatment.  In order to prevent problems getting worse and to increase the chances of recovery, people need early access to the right type of psychological therapy.

The Government's Mandate to the NHS commits to putting mental health on a par with physical health and giving everyone timely access to evidence-based services.  Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) with their local authority partners are the local leaders who can make this a reality.  In preparing five year strategic plans, now is the time to ensure everyone has access to a choice of psychological therapies when they need them.
