My Approach

The aim of a psychoanalytic approach is to enable you to be more in touch with your emotions, to shed light on internal conflicts, and to be truthful with yourself, so as to lead a life that is more spontaneous and fulfilling.

What distinguishes a psychoanalytic approach is an emphasis on how the unconscious parts of the mind can influence our lives and relationships. The emotional obstacles that we struggle with in our everyday lives are understood as deriving from deep inside, below the surface. Experiences from our past continue to exert a profound influence upon our present existence. Similarly the nature of our earliest relationships will give shape to the way in which we engage with others. Often we can go through life searching for what has been lost, reenacting familiar dynamics, or repeating damaging behaviours.

To understand the difficulties that you are confronted with, it is necessary to search for the roots of the problem. This is a gradual process, involving an in-depth exploration of the self. The format of the session is unstructured and you are encouraged to say whatever comes to mind. By listening closely to the patterns and associations that emerge, we may be able to learn something about your inner world and unconscious processes. The relationship between patient and therapist plays a central role, as this guides our understanding of what occurs in significant relationships outside of the consulting room.

Initial Consultation

The first step would be to meet for an initial consultation, which is typically one hour and a half. The purpose of this meeting would be so that we can think together about what is going on for you at the moment, and what you are looking for help with. We would probably meet for a second time before arriving at a decision on whether to proceed with psychotherapy, or consider other options. If we decide to commence with psychotherapy we would discuss a regular fee for fifty minute sessions, according to what would be manageable for you.
