Description

This landmark play by Tennessee Williams, – America’s Chekov, won him the Pulitzer Prize. It became, a landmark 1951 movie directed by Elia Kazan. It is one of the best transcriptions from stage to film and is regarded as a cinematic masterpiece. The electrifying depiction of raw sexuality by Brando propelled him to stardom but was regarded by some as shocking. Vivien Leigh’s extraordinary depiction of Blanche’s collapse from prissy, high-minded southern belle into madness is heart-rending. Williams’ play tells us about madness, shame and doubt, attitudes to sexuality, class, and much about the author.

This is an online event using Zoom. You need to watch the film in advance of the session. Simon will share his thoughts about the main themes of the film before sending us off into small discussion groups. We will come back together for a plenary with Simon to round off the evening.

The film is available to watch on Amazon Prime video, but make sure you watch the restored 1993 director’s uncut version.
