Description

Sigmund Freud and the sculptor Oscar Nemon

In July 1931 Sigmund Freud wrote to his friend Max Eitingon, “Someone is making a bust of me, the sculptor Oscar Nemon. The head which the gaunt, goatee-bearded artist has fashioned from the dirt is a very good and an astonishingly lifelike impression of me’.

Aurelia Young is Oscar Nemon’s daughter, and she will explain, in her illustrated talk, how Freud was persuaded to sit for the very young sculptor. Aurelia Young will trace Oscar Nemon’s dramatic journey across Europe from his home in Croatia to seek refuge in England in the 1930s. Nemon sculpted many of Freud’s disciples including Sandor Ferenczi, Princess Marie Bonaparte, Ernest Jones and Dr Donald Winnicott. Amongst Nemon’s other famous sitters were Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana. Nemon’s wooden bust of Freud can be seen in the Freud Museum.
