Psychoanalysis for the People: Free clinics and the Social Mission of Psychoanalysis
Book ticketsOrganised by:
Freud Museum, with Raluca Soreanu and Joanna Ryan
Description
Free and low cost psychoanalytic therapy clinics, outside the main institutions, have an important but often overlooked presence in the history of psychoanalysis.
This conference addresses the immense diversity and creativity of some contemporary clinics, in several countries and with different groups of people. Many such clinics have led the way in addressing issues of class, race, poverty, marginalisation, culture and disempowerment within a psychoanalytic framework but they are often not much recognised, valued or taught about.
The conference explores their work in enabling access to psychoanalytic forms of therapy for people who otherwise cannot afford therapy, or for whom there are cultural and social barriers, or who are otherwise excluded by the social positioning and cultural attitudes of mainstream psychoanalytic practices.
