The British Psychoanalytic Council offers accreditation to medical practitioners who have demonstrated psychodynamic and psychoanalytic clinical experience and commitment to developing their psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic practice.
Registration in the Medical Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Section of the BPC register will offer the doctor a link with the professional body registering psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists working across the public and private sectors across the lifespan. Membership of the British Psychoanalytic Council will confer clinical, continuing professional development and strategic advantages:
Clinical: the BPC offers a link with the psychoanalytic community through which to pursue further psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic clinical development.
Continuing professional development: the BPC offers a robust and well established CPD and ethical framework in which to develop professional practice.
Strategic/political: the BPC offers a link with the psychoanalytic community through which to harness support and advice relating to psychoanalytic service development.
Applicants should be/have been involved in workplace based assessment throughout their training. The assessment includes Royal College of Psychiatrists on line WPBAs (workplace based assessments) within the advanced psychiatric medical psychotherapy training portfolio.
In order to qualify for registration, applicants must show sufficient competence in all areas outlined in the RCPsych standards of proficiency. Medical professionals trained in psychiatry, general practice or other medical specialties will be considered.
Applications are considered by the Scrutiny Committee of the Association of Medical Psychodynamic Psychotherapists. The committee will take up references and may ask for more written information, or to meet with an applicant.
Accepted applicants will be eligible for inclusion in the BPC Register in the Medical Psychodynamic Psychotherapy category. It is anticipated that these registrants will be eligible for inclusion in any statutory or national register as psychotherapists. Note that not all our Medical Psychotherapists maintain their GMC registration.
